How to Care for a Tattoo: A Complete Guide for Perfect Healing
Getting a tattoo doesn’t end when you turn off the machine. The healing process is just as important as the work itself. Proper care ensures that the tattoo retains its color, definition, and looks incredible for years to come.
As a tattoo artist specializing in realistic and minimalist tattoos, I’ll explain how to properly care for a tattoo, based on what I recommend to each of my clients in Barranquilla and abroad.
Stage 1 – First 24 hours: the most delicate part
Should I leave the plastic on all day?
It depends. If you applied a special protective film (like Dermalize or SecondSkin), you can leave it on for 24 to 72 hours. If it’s regular plastic, remove it after 2–3 hours to let your skin breathe.
How to wash a fresh tattoo?
Stage 2 – Days 2 to 7: Regeneration begins
What to expect?
The tattoo may look darker or “opaque,” begin to form a very thin layer similar to a soft scab, and may itch slightly.
What to do (and what to avoid)?
Stage 3 – Week 2 onwards: Internal healing
The skin continues to heal internally for 3 to 6 weeks. Continue moisturizing the tattoo once a day and avoid direct sunlight for at least a month.
Extra tips to take good care of your tattoo
- Comfortable, clean clothing: Avoid rough fabrics that may rub against the tattoo.
- Avoid exercise that causes excessive sweating for the first few days.
- Use sunscreen (SPF 50+) once the tattoo is healed if you will be exposed.
- Get medical attention if anything seems unusual: severe redness, pus, or fever..
